Surgical Orthodontics

For Complicated Orthodontic Issues

High Line Orthodontics in Chelsea, NY is pleased to offer surgical orthodontics. Surgical orthodontics, also known as jaw surgery, is a procedure that corrects, straightens and/or repositions the jaw. The goals of the procedure depend on the type and severity of your condition. Orthodontic treatments such as braces and Invisalign® will be used both before and after orthodontic surgery to ensure that the top and bottom jaws fit together properly and you can eat and speak effectively.

Do I Need Surgical Orthodontics?

While most orthodontic patients do not require jaw surgery, patients with dental and skeletal irregularities, TMJ pain and speech difficulties may benefit from this procedure. The best way to know whether you are a good candidate for surgical orthodontics is to request an appointment with Dr. Pompei. However, there are a few signs and symptoms that may indicate that you could benefit from surgical help. These include:

  • Asymmetrical face shape

  • Chronic mouth breathing

  • Protruding jaw

  • Open bite

  • TMJ pain and chronic headaches

  • Difficulty with speech

  • Difficulty chewing, biting or swallowing

  • Receding lower jaw and chin

  • Injury to the jaw

  • Birth defects affecting the jaw or bite

  • Difficulty making the upper and lower jaws meet

  • Sleep apnea

Not every patient will need surgery, even if they experience some of the symptoms listed above. In many cases, jaw misalignment can be corrected with standard orthodontic treatment options, such as braces, Invisalign®, Spark Clear Aligners and more. However, in more extreme cases, jaw surgery in conjunction with standard orthodontic treatment can align the teeth and jaws so that they fit together correctly.
