RENéE POMPEI, DDS
Meet Your Board Certified New York City Orthodontist
Renée C. Pompei, DDS started her working life after college as an information technology and strategy consultant for a global management consulting firm. For five years in this role, she genuinely enjoyed traveling around the country and being part of project teams that developed custom software solutions for clients. However, it was not quite the work that stirred passion in her heart. While she was busy consulting, she found time to get braces since she had always wanted to improve her smile. This orthodontic experience made her realize her true calling.
Although it was a challenge to change careers and start dental school several years later than the average dentist, it was unquestionably the clear choice. Seven long years of post-undergraduate education and now over a decade of practicing orthodontics later, she knows she made the right decision. There’s nothing more rewarding than getting to know people from around the city and every walk of life, watching them grow to love their new smiles, and helping them improve their health and function. She aims to lead High Line Orthodontics with compassionate, detailed-oriented and expert care, and strives to be a better orthodontist with each passing day.
Dr. Pompei completed her undergraduate degree at the College of William and Mary in Virginia, where she earned a BA in Interdisciplinary Government, Economics, and Business. She completed pre-dental studies at the University of Pittsburgh and earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery from Columbia University. During her time at Columbia, Dr. Pompei was inducted into the national dental honor society, Omicron Kappa Upsilon, an honor given to only seven other of her dental school classmates. She completed her training in orthodontics and received her certificate in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics from Tufts University in Boston, MA.
Dr. Pompei is board certified by the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO). Board certification is a voluntary step that orthodontists take to demonstrate their expertise and dedication to the field. She serves on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the Northeastern Society of Orthodontists (NESO) is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) Committee on Conferences, is former Chair of the AAO’s Council on Orthodontic Practice, and is a NESO delegate to the AAO House of Delegates. She is also an active member of the ADA and the New York State Dental Association.
Dr. Pompei loves, loves, LOVES living in New York City! Although born and raised in Alexandria, Virginia, the first time she stepped foot in Manhattan, she knew she had found her people and had to move there. New York is her constant source of creative energy, inspiration to hustle, discovery, and diversity. When she’s not sleeping, eating, and breathing orthodontics (because she loves ortho so much too!), she is spending time with her family and friends, running in Central Park, roaming around the Met or the Whitney, riding her bike down the Hudson River Greenway, reading in a neighborhood café, singing karaoke, or enjoying the endless supply of live music, comedy, or theater the city has to offer. She’s a huge tennis fan, ever drawn to the mountains and ski slopes, and will rarely turn down the chance to play board games or debate policy and philosophy.
“THERE’S nothing more rewarding than getting to know people from around the city and every walk of life, watching them grow to love their new smiles, RADIATING confidenCE.”

WHY CHOOSE A BOARD CERTIFIED ORTHODONTIST?
WHY CHOOSE A BOARD CERTIFIED ORTHODONTIST?
Dr. Pompei is an ABO Board Certified Orthodontist. The American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) was founded in 1929 and is the oldest specialty board in dentistry. The ABO’s aim is to elevate the standards of the practice of orthodontia, to familiarize the public with its aim and ideals, and to protect the public against irresponsible and unqualified practitioners. The Board upholds four main objectives supported by its mission:
- To evaluate the knowledge and clinical skills of graduates of accredited orthodontic programs by conducting exams and conferring time-limited certificates
- To re-evaluate clinical knowledge and skills through administration of re-certification exams throughout a Diplomate’s career
- To support the development of quality graduate, postgraduate, and continuing education programs in orthodontics
- To promote and encourage certification expertise throughout the world
To become board certified, an orthodontist has to pass a rigorous set of written and clinical examinations, as well as a comprehensive review of his or her credentials. Dr. Pompei completed Board Certification by bringing six cases she had treated before board examiners and defending her diagnoses, treatment plans and critically evaluating the results via an oral examination. Once certified, Board Certified orthodontists become diplomates of the ABO. Those orthodontists must become re-certified every ten years via another examination on recent scientific advances and studies to maintain board certification. Dr. Pompei recently became a re-certified ABO Diplomate. Becoming board certified is a symbol of the orthodontist’s pursuit of continued proficiency and excellence in orthodontics.
