What is Palatal Expansion?

palatal expansion

Palatal expansion is a type of orthodontic treatment that widens the upper jaw, not just by expanding the position of teeth on the bone, but by making the actual bone perimeter greater. Some benefits include:

  • Improved dental alignment
  • Better breathing
  • Improved speech

It is a safe and relatively painless treatment that can be performed in your orthodontist’s office.

If you reach adulthood with a constricted palate, the only way to widen it is with jaw surgery, which requires cutting the bone under anesthesia. But in childhood, we can put an appliance in called a palatal expander. With very gentle, gradual pressure, we separate the two bones and create more space for the teeth that don’t have enough room to come in.

How is it performed?

It is performed using a device known as a palatal expander. This device is inserted into the roof of the mouth and gradually expands the palate. The orthodontist checks the expansion device regularly to make sure that it is working properly and expanding the palate at the correct rate.

Dr. Pompei at High Line Orthodontics may recommend palatal expansion during early orthodontic treatment. She will get to know your child’s unique orthodontic situation and determine the best course of action. If she recommends this treatment, please don’t hesitate to ask any questions you may have about this treatment. It is simple, safe and effective.
